Non-Immigrant O: Retirement

For foreigners aged 50 and over who want to live in Thailand without working. The route is simple on paper: prove you are 50+, prove the money, get the visa, extend it yearly.

Not legal advice. Financial thresholds below reflect long-standing standard practice. Confirm current figures with the Thai embassy or consulate where you apply, or your local immigration office, before you act.

Who this is for

Anyone 50 years or older who will not work in Thailand and can meet the financial requirement. Unlike the marriage route, no Thai spouse is needed.

The financial requirement (pick one)

Verify locally: seasoning periods and accepted income proof vary by office. Confirm with your immigration office before you move money.

Two ways in

  1. Non-O from home, then extend. Apply for a 90-day Non-O (retirement) at thaievisa.go.th from your home country, enter Thailand, open the Thai bank account, season the funds, and apply for the one-year retirement extension before the 90 days expire. Same rhythm as the marriage route, different paperwork.
  2. Convert inside Thailand. Enter on a visa exemption or tourist visa and convert to a Non-O at immigration (commonly done in Bangkok), then extend. You generally need at least 21 days left on your entry stamp to start the conversion. Verify locally.

Living on it

Retirement vs. marriage route

If you are married to a Thai national, the marriage route usually wins: the financial bar is half (400,000 vs. 800,000 THB), and the seasoning rules are simpler. The retirement route is the answer when there is no Thai spouse in the picture.
